There are hundreds of new trends on social media every week, it’s easy to get lost on the path to creating your authentic wardrobe.
As an aspiring journalist who loves fashion, I’ve been researching from a young age what styles worked best for me. This included experimenting – trying out different clothes, colours, and accessories and changing what fashion meant to me.
After being through every category; to just say it was overwhelming would be an understatement. I was so fixated on finding the right fit.
Creating your own personal style, however, starts with stepping back from trends, rules and expectations. It’s all about finding your fashion attitude.
The beginning

First, I had to know, what is personal style?
As Alyssa Grabinski, fashion writer at The Everygirl defines it, “how you express yourself through your clothes and accessories- it’s how you interpret fashion and incorporate it into your daily life.”
It is your branding, who you are or who you want to be.
Researching, watching videos or reading fashion blogs can help you discover your style.
Pinterest is my favourite platform for finding fashion inspiration. It allows you to make boards with pictures you pin. Creating an overall idea of what types of styles you like.
Experimenting
Once you have an idea of the types of styles you like, this is where the magic happens.
By taking your newfound knowledge you can begin a fashion test drive.
Experimenting with clothing looks different for everyone, trying different fashion categories and picking what aspects you like from each one. You can try wearing a new colour and styling something you’d normally avoid.
When trying out new outfits, feel how each one fits you personally. You’ll know what you like best.
Owning your fashion attitude
Having a personal style is one thing, but owning your fashion attitude is another. Your fashion attitude can be deciding to dress comfy today because the weather is chilly or wearing the most vibrant thing you own because why not?
It all comes down to who you are and who you want to be.
As New York Fashion Designer, Iris Apfel once said, “Fashion you can buy, but style you possess. The key to style is learning who you are, which takes years. There’s no how-to road map to style. It’s about self-expression and, above all, attitude.”
